Quad Cities Businesses Go Red for Women Effort being made to attract attention to heart health
Beginning Friday and continuing over the next two weeks many area businesses will be literally going red to attract attention to the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women movement and upcoming silent auction and luncheon. Cardiovascular disease kills about 460,000 women per year – nearly twice as many women as all forms of cancer. Heart disease claims the life of nearly one woman every minute, yet 1 in 3 women aren’t aware of the risks.
Go Red for Women is an initiative of the American Heart Association that encourages women to come together and collectively wipe out heart disease. It challenges women to know their risk factors, recognize the warning signs, and understand how to take action to reduce their personal risk. And then, to share what they’ve learned with others.
Area businesses have agreed to shine a spotlight on heart health in many ways. Some, like local Go Red for Women sponsor Trinity Regional Health Systems, are covering exterior lighting with red gels to give their buildings a red glow. A giant red dress, the symbol of Go Red, will be reflected on the iWireless Center and will be seen on 53rd Street in Davenport at Russell Construction. Many buildings are changing high-profile lighting to red in order to garner more attention. Area retail stores have joined in through messages on digital signs and in-store displays. Quad Cities auto dealerships have agreed to display lines of red cars together. Visit http://www.facebook.com/quadcitiesgored for a complete listing of participating businesses.
“We are thrilled with the number of businesses that have agreed to ‘Go Red’ in an effort to bring more attention to our cause,” stated Ginny Wilson-Peters, Quad Cities Go Red for Women chairperson. “So many women are dying because of a lack of knowledge, and we have the power to change that through our actions. I lost my mother to heart disease five years ago. She didn’t know she was ill until it was too late. I’m involved with Go Red because I want to be sure that more women learn the important facts that can help prevent this from happening in their families.”
The signature event for the initiative in the Quad Cities is the Go Red for Women luncheon which will be held on November 4 at the RiverCenter in Davenport. Over 500 men and women will come together to enjoy educational presentations, a silent auction, vendor fair and a heart-healthy luncheon. In addition to raising lifesaving funds the event is designed to give women the tools and knowledge they need to help avoid heart disease.
Table sponsorships are available for $1500, or individual event tickets are $35 each. Reservations for the event can be made by visiting www.heart.org/quadcitiesgored or calling the American Heart Association at 563.323.4321. All guests are encouraged to wear red to support the cause.
